MUSIC AT SCHOOL!!!

Many of us had the chance today, only an hour ago, to enjoy very good music, produced by our School choirs and by Vox Pop, an accapella band that has both Olivos and Punta Chica Music teachers! Some of you sang... and even myself! Didn´t we enjoy ourselves?
But... How many of us have any idea of what music is, or which are the notes, or how we can hear them sound so beautifully... What is a melody? What is a harmony?
Find out , send a comment to the blog, and earn HOUSE POINTS!!! (Deadline, June 18th)

What is a MELODY?

Melody is one of the most basic elements of music. A note is a sound with a particular pitch and duration. String a series of notes together, one after the other, and you have a melody. But the melody of a piece of music isn't just any string of notes. It's the notes that catch your ear as you listen; the line that sounds most important is the melody. There are some common terms used in discussions of melody that you may find it useful to know. First of all, the melodic line of a piece of music is the string of notes that make up the melody

What is a HARMONY?

In music, harmony is the use of simultaneous pitches (tones, notes), or chords.[1] The study of harmony involves chords and their construction and chord progressions and the principles of connection that govern them.[2] Harmony is often said to refer to the "vertical" aspect of music, as distinguished from melodic line, or the "horizontal" aspect.[3] Counterpoint, which refers to the interweaving of melodic lines, and polyphony, which refers to the relationship of separate independent voices, are thus sometimes distinguished from harmony.

Music!!!!!

What is melody?

Melody is the tune of the music. If you hear a song, the line that you would probably sing/hum is the melody. It is normally the highest (in pitch) notes of the song, but not always. Harmony is the notes that go with the melody that enrich its sound. These can be chords, intervals, or simply notes. In a vocal choir, the soprano normally sings the melody while the alto, tenor, and bass sing the harmony.

What is harmony?
Harmony is a term arising from music and it describes the process of playing or singing two or more different notes at the same time to form chords.
Usually this produces sounds which are pleasing to hear and so the term is also used in a non-musical sense to describe people or a system working together in a pleasing way.

Which are the notes?

To understand harmony you first have to understandmelody.Melody is a group of notes played one after the other. Melody is the tune. It’s often the easiest part of music to remember, the part that you hum.

Harmony is also a group of notes, except these notes are played behind the melody. Harmony supports the melody and gives the music texture or mood. You can change how a piece of music sounds by changing only the harmony. The same melody will sound very different if you play it with one harmony or another.

What is Melody?

Two songs can use the same chords and same strumming pattern yet still be different. Melody is what will distinguish the two songs and make them different.

What Is Harmony?

Harmony is when you hear two or more different tones sounding at the same time. But really tu anderstand Harmony you have to know what is melody.

But the melody of a piece of music isn't just any string of notes. It's the notes that catch your ear as you listen; the line that sounds most important is the melody. There are some common terms used in discussions of melody that you may find it useful to know. First of all, the melodic line of a piece of music is the string of notes that make up the melody. Extra notes, such as trills and slides, that are not part of the main melodic line but are added to the melody either by the composer or the performer to make the melody more complex and interesting are called ornaments or embellishments. Below are some more concepts that are associated with melody.

What is Harmony?
When you have more than one pitch sounding at the same time in music, the result is harmony. Harmony is one of the basic elements of music, but it is not as basic as some other elements, such as rhythm and melody. You can have music that is just rhythms, with no pitches at all. You can also have music that is just a single melody, or just a melody with rhythm accompaniment. But as soon as there is more than one pitch sounding at a time, you have harmony. Even if nobody is actually playing chords, or even if the notes are part of independent contrapuntal lines, you can hear the relationship of any notes that happen at the same time, and it is this relationship that makes the harmony.

Melody is a musical and successive line of single tones or pitches perceived as a unity. Its characteristics include range, shape, and movement. Each of these will be discussed separately.
Harmony is the relation of notes to notes and chords to chords as they are played simultaneously.

Hi Miss Florence!!!
I was investigating and I found the answers o those questions...

...¿What is Melody?
A melody is a coherent sequence of sounds and silences that unfolds in a linear sequence and has an own identity and meaning within a particular sound environment.

¿What is a Harmony?
The term harmony derives from the Greek ἁρμονία (harmonía), meaning "joint, agreement, concord", from the verb ἁρμόζω (harmozo), "to fit together, to join".[5] The term was often used for the whole field of music, while "music" referred to the arts in general.

Hi Miss Florence,

What is melody ?
A melody is a linear succession of musical tones which is perceived as a single entity. In its most literal sense, a melody is a sequence of pitches and durations, while, more figuratively, the term has occasionally been extended to include successions of other musical elements such as tone color.

What is harmony ?
In music, harmony is the use of simultaneous pitches (tones, notes), or chords. The study of harmony involves chords and their construction and chord progressions and the principles of connection that govern them. Harmony is often said to refer to the "vertical" aspect of music, as distinguished from melodic line, or the "horizontal" aspect. Counterpoint, which refers to the interweaving of melodic lines, and polyphony, which refers to the relationship of separate independent voices, are thus sometimes distinguished from harmony.

Dear Florance: (by MATEO, 6A)

Music for me are beutifull sounds, some of them are great, and some of them bad. For example in South Africa they believe that the sound of the vuvuzuellas is great, and I hate it!

The diccionary Webster II Dictionary says that music is "the art of arranging tones in an orderly sequence so as to produce a unified and continuous composition"

In music, the term note has two primary meanings:

1) a sign used in musical notation to represent the relative duration

2) and pitch of a sound;
a pitched sound itself.

According to Wikipedia, "harmony is the use of simultaneous pitches (tones, notes), or chords.[1] The study of harmony involves chords and their construction and chord progressions and the principles of connection that govern them.[2] Harmony is often said to refer to the "vertical" aspect of music, as distinguished from melodic line, or the "horizontal" aspect.[3] Counterpoint, which refers to the interweaving of melodic lines, and polyphony, which refers to the relationship of separate independent voices, are thus sometimes distinguished from harmony.

Harmony is according to me that use of notes in a manner as to create a good song that is not "ugly".

According to Wikipedia Melody is
(from Greek μελῳδία -melōidía, "singing, chanting"[1]), also tune, voice, or line, is a linear succession of musical tones which is perceived as a single entity.

In its most literal sense, a melody is a sequence of pitches and durations, while, more figuratively, the term has occasionally been extended to include successions of other musical elements such as tone color.

Melodies often consist of one or more musical phrases or motifs, and are usually repeated throughout a song or piece in various forms. Melodies may also be described by their melodic motion or the pitches or the intervals between pitches (predominantly conjunct or disjunct or with further restrictions), pitch range, tension and release, continuity and coherence, cadence, and shape.

Melodies according to me is what makes the song sound great.

Hi Miss Ale
Check what I found!!!

Music:
The music, ("the art of the Muses") is, according to the traditional definition of the term, the art of sensible and logically organize a coherent mix of sounds and silences using the principles fundamentals of melody, harmony and rhythm, through the intervention of complex psycho-psychic processes.

Melody:
A melody is a sequence of sounds and silences that unfolds in a linear sequence and has an own identity and meaning within a particular sound environment. The melody part of a conceptual base horizontally with successive events in time and not vertical, as would be on a string where the sounds are simultaneous.

Harmony:

term harmony (archaic, and also accepted harmony) has many meanings, musical and extra somehow related to each other. In general, "harmony" is the balance of proportions between different parts of a whole, and the result always connotes beauty. In music, harmony is the discipline that studies the perception of sound in a "vertical" or "simultaneous" in the form of chords and the relationship established with those of its neighbors. In the language of tango is called "harmony" to the countermelody executed on the violin or strings of an orchestra.

Hi Miss florence,
Question 1
ANSWER: A melody is one of the most basic elements of music. A note is a sound with a particular pitch and duration. String a series of notes together, one after the other, and you have a melody. But the melody of a piece of music isn't just any string of notes. It's the notes that catch your ear as you listen; the line that sounds most important is the melody.
Question 2
ANSWER: When you have more than one pitch sounding at the same time in music, the result is harmony. Harmony is one of the basic elements of music, but it is not as basic as some other elements, such as rhythm and melody. As soon as there is more than one pitch sounding at a time, you have harmony.
